Dr. Martin R. Eichelberger is a professor of Surgery and of Pediatrics at The George Washington University School of Medicine. He graduated from Princeton University and Hahnemann University Medical School and completed his surgical educations at the Case Western Reserve University Hospital in Cleveland and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He holds visiting professorships in Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia as well as the United States.
As a pediatric surgeon and director of Emergency Trauma and Burn Services at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., Dr. Eichelberger sees more of children’s pain and distress than most people ever will.

Stirred by his experiences as a surgeon and the soft spot he has for the kids he treats, Dr. Eichelberger has devoted his life to easing the pain and suffering of children. His lifelong quest to prevent childhood injuries has led to increased research, improved safety measures and significant change in awareness of child safety issues.
His renowned expertise in the field of pediatric trauma care and injury control is a driving force behind Safe Kids Worldwide (formerly the National SAFE KIDS Campaign), a nonprofit he founded in 1988 to focus on childhood injury prevention. Dr. C. Everett Koop, former surgeon general of the United States, is his mentor. Dr. Eichelberger is leading the organization’s initiatives where injury prevention strategies have contributed to a nearly 40 percent decline in the child death rate from accidental injuries since its inception. This important and successful movement has expanded to 16 countries and has become Safe Kids Worldwide.

Dr. Eichelberger’s pioneering efforts have led to changes in public policy such as child occupant protection laws, bicycle helmet requirements and playground safety guidelines. He has educated a generation of parents and helped translate injury prevention research into simple programs that have a real impact on the frequency of childhood injuries. Also, his vision has put millions of bike helmets, smoke alarms and child safety seats into the hands of families in need.

His determination to save kids’ lives and protect them from unintentional injury mdash the number one killer of children under 14 mdash motivated him to become director of the Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network for children and medical director of the Emergency Medical Services for Children National Resource Center.
